We gave up on MSN in mid-October and stayed with Qwest by upgrading from a personal residential service to their OfficeWorks package. It costs a little bit more for the extra features but being able to stay with a reliable service is worth it. With OfficeWorks, we will get 5 email addresses, 20 MB of web storage space and a vanity domain name, i.e., dean-and-ang.com. We were supposed to get a static IP address but later we were told it would cost us an additional $15 so I declined. I wanted to have a static IP address and domain name that pointed to our PC at home. Instead we'll have to stay with a dynamic (changing) address like we had before. The domain name we can get won't point to our PC, it'll point to the webserver at Qwest. In the past I've been using a program that every hour checks our IP address, modifies our main webpage and uploads it to Qwest's server. It's works great but anyone who wants browse our website, view the webcam, run netmeeting or download files from us has to go to Qwest first to either get forwarded to our PC at home or to find out what our current address is. There is another option that I've been looking into. It's called Dynamic DNS. It requires that I install a small program on my computer that checks our IP address on a scheduled basis and then sends the number to a server at the Dynamic DNS service. They will then update their database to match a domain name of our choice to the address of our PC. This would be almost as good as having a static IP. |
